You are welcome to the information on the Department of Performing Arts.

This Department started as the Department of Music in 1964, in the then National Teachers’ College Kyambogo. It was established with the main purpose of producing teachers of music for secondary school education.

When Kyambogo was transformed into an Institute of Teacher Education in 1986, the role of producing secondary school music teachers was transferred to the newly established 10 National Teachers’ Colleges across the country. Thus the Department took on the task of producing diploma holder tutors for Primary Teachers’ Colleges and graduate teachers and tutors for the various tertiary education institutions.

The change in the name of the Department into that of Performing Arts took place in 2003 when Kyambogo attained the status of a fully fledged public University. Performing Arts encompasses the disciplines of music, dance and drama. The music section in the Department is well established and the Department is in search of personnel with knowledge and skills in dance and drama so as to fully establish these sections as well.
