Message from the Head of Department
Mr. Okou Imakit (MEd-PE, Dip.Ed (NIE) – MAK.
On behalf of the Department of Sportscience, I would like to extend my warmest welcome to all of you visiting our homepage.
The Department of sportscience is one of the seven departments in the Faculty of Science. It was established to offer physical education, recreation management and exercise science programmes in Uganda. In accordance with the university's motto of Knowledge and skills for Service the Department also adopts an approach to educate by empowering the whole person with skills to serve. Here our students are able to develop cognitive and practical skills within a thriving scientific environment.
At present, the Department has around 30 dedicated members (full time &part-time) to prepare our students in the recreation, exercise science and physical education careers. We also have 4 of our staff pursuing their PhD programmes abroad. To foster cooperation among colleagues, we collaborate in research, teaching and sports programmes. Furthermore, most of our colleagues in the Department are involved in community work and have established strong links with various sports organizations and schools. This enhances more favourable opportunities in the placement of our students as interns and student teachers in various organizations. This is a niche of our department in addition to our many strengths. We lead the inter-faculty sports week and this has brought our faculty members and students together as a family with a strong sports culture.
Members at the department continue with innovative ways of educating, service rendering and research in line with principles embedded in the strategic plan of the University; whose guiding theme is Advancement and Promotion of Knowledge and the Development of Skills.
