BRIEF ON COMPETITIVE RESEARCH GRANTS

The University Council approved 1.7bn for competitive research in the Financial Year 2018/19 to Research, innovation and Knowledge generation.

Consequently, the Vice Chancellor appointed an Ad hoc Committee headed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) manage the research grant. Below are the Terms Of Reference of the Competitive Research Grants Ad hoc Committee.

  • To develop criteria for competitive research grant awards
  • To issue calls for grants
  • To develop a method of vetting the proposals received.
  • To coordinate with Research Grants and Publications Committee.
  • To award research grants to the best proposals.
  • To carry out any other duties as assigned by the Vice Chancellor.

CALL FOR RESEARCH PROPOSALS

The Committee issued the first Call for research proposals in hard and electronic format to all Faculties and Departments on Friday 17th August 2018 with Monday 17th September 2018 being the deadline.

The Call targeted full-time Academic Staff of Kyambogo University with a PhD at the rank of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor or Professor.

The budget limit for proposals in Humanities was twenty five (25) million shillings while Science-based disciplines were forty (40) million shillings.

REVIEW PROCESS

The Committee subjected all proposals to an administrative review. Out of eighty-three (83) proposal received, only thirty-nine (39) proposals met the requirements specified in the Call.

Names and all other personal information of applicants of the thirty-nine (39) proposals were withheld before sending their proposals to senior academics in the relevant fields for review. The names of applicants were withheld to avoid bias.

AWARDS

Nineteen (19) out of thirty-nine (39) applicants were successfully awarded grants to carry out research. Twelve (12) awardees were from humanities while seven (7) were from science-based disciplines.

All awardees were required to sign a Bonding Agreement with Kyambogo University before receiving the funds.

Researchers are expected to have completed their research and published their findings in reputable journals by June 2019
