SUMMARY:Join Our Public Lecture on GIS and Earth Observation Systems
DESCRIPTION:Kyambogo University’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities\, Department of Geography invites you to a Public Lecture on GIS and Earth Observation Systems through the Digital Earth Africa Learning Platform. This engaging session will introduce participants to Earth observation technologies\, data-driven decision-making\, and practical applications in various sectors. \nEvent Details\n\nEvent: Public Lecture on GIS and Earth Observation Systems\nPlatform: Digital Earth Africa Learning Platform\nOrganizer: Kyambogo University\, Faculty of Arts and Humanities\, Department of Geography\nDate & Time: Tuesday\, 4th March 2025\, 2:30 PM East African Time\nLocation: Online via Zoom\n\nWhat to Expect\nThe Digital Earth Africa Learning Platform provides an interactive environment where participants will: \n\nLearn the significance of Earth observations.\nExplore Digital Earth Africa datasets through an interactive map.\nGain insights into Python coding for spatial analysis.\nUnderstand how Earth observation (EO) data is transforming decision-making in areas such as resource management\, food security\, and urbanization.\n\nNote: A laptop is required for demonstrations. \nHow to Join the Session\n\nMeeting ID: 589 079 3425\nZoom Link: Join the lecture\n\nFor more details\, visit: Digital Earth Africa Learning Platform \nPrevious Event Highlights\nOn 22nd October 2024\, Digital Earth Africa\, represented by Kenneth Mubea\, conducted a training session for Master’s and PhD students at the Department of Geography\, Kyambogo University. Organized by Prof. Bernard Barasa\, this session focused on GIS and Earth Observation Systems. The training aimed to equip postgraduate students with the necessary technical skills to enhance their research projects and dissertations. \nThis lecture is part of a series of training sessions designed to bridge the technical capacity gap in Earth observation across Africa and empower the continent’s future leaders in spatial sciences. The event was widely recognized for its impact in advancing GIS and Earth observation knowledge among students. \nFind more about this past event on X (Twitter): Kyambogo Faculty of Arts & Humanities\nWatch the event recording on YouTube: Past Event Details \nWe look forward to your participation in this upcoming session as we continue to enhance geospatial education and research at Kyambogo University!

SUMMARY:Public Lecture: Translating Science into Policy and Practice
DESCRIPTION:Kyambogo University is on September 27\, 2022 set to host an online discussion on translating policy into practice. \nThe discussion is expected to attract researchers and lawmakers from across the globe. \nThe discussion will be hosted by the Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo University\, Prof. Eli Katunguka. Some of the discussants will include Dr. Miria Matembe\, a former Member of Parliament\, Dr. Daniel Slunge and Prof. Sofia Boqvist from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Dr. Judith Irene Nagasha from Kyambogo University. The Director of Research and Graduating training at Kyambogo University\, Prof. Bosco Bua is also expected to weigh in on the conversation on how research can be translated to policy. \n \nThe Public lecture follows a series of pieces of training for researchers on how to translate their research findings into policy.  With funding from Agriculture for Food Security (AgriFose 2030)\, Kyambogo University partnered with the University of Gothenburg in Sweden to offer this training. The exercise saw researchers for Kyambogo University\, Makerere University and the University of Nairobi receive this training. \nResearch is imperative because new problems occur every day hence the need for implementable solutions and suggestions to tackle the new problems that arise and inform policy. Globally\, today there is demand including in African countries for universities to carry out more relevant and impactful research which many are doing. However\, while universities engage in impactful research\, the major challenge has been how to translate their research findings into policy and practice. The practice has been designing and conducting quality research that is disseminated through peer-reviewed conference presentations and publications yet most times policy-makers and practitioners hardly attend these conferences and may never read the published findings. At the end of the day\, research findings are not translated into policy and practice. \nWith the training\, Kyambogo University sought to develop the skills of scientists to communicate their research findings to policymakers and leaders through stakeholder interaction and policy engagement activities. This course will enhance the skills of scientists and innovators to create opportunities for engagement between academic researchers and policymakers. \nThe 3-months course started on March 10\, 2022\, with the training of over 30 researchers from Kyambogo University\, Makerere University\, Nairobi University and the University of Gothenburg.    The training covers the following areas \n\nResearch and policy linkages\nThe role of research and researchers; opportunities for engagement\n\n\nUnderstanding the policy landscape\n\n\nModels and strategies for stakeholder interaction and policy engagement\nTools for engagement; Science communication- policy briefs\, press releases\, elevator pitch\, use of social media\, stakeholder mapping.\nPlanning for and measuring the impact of research on stakeholder interaction and policy engagement.\n\nIt is envisaged that the next training will involve more researchers within the country and the African continent. \nContact person \nJudith Irene Natasha\, Kyambogo University\, judith.nagasha@gmail.com\, +256 782321113
