SUMMARY:Kyambogo University Public Lecture
DESCRIPTION:A new study conducted in 13 districts of Uganda by Democratic Engagement and Action shows that many people involved in election preparations and Ugandan politics anticipate violence around the 2021 election. Ugandans are already stirred up for the 2021 General Elections and political parties are working to win the hearts and minds of an increasingly excited population. \nThere’s a lot in the public domain about electoral reforms\, levelled ground for all parties and candidates and much more. \nKyambogo University supports pro-active activities aimed at making a fundamental contribution to democratic governance to make communities safer places to live and work in. The University is\, therefore\, organizing a public lecture on the theme “The Road to 2021\, How Prepared are we?”   \nThis public lecture will be hosted by Kyambogo University on December 2\, 2019\, at 2:00 pm in the CTF building. \nJustice Simon Mugenyi  Byabakama\, Chairperson Electoral Commission is a keynote speaker. The panellists include Ofwono Opondo\, the government spokesperson\, Nobert Mao\, the DP President\, Crispin Kaheru\, former Coordinator CCEDU and Clare Ninsiima\, the Senior Legal Officer\, Kyambogo University. \n \n

SUMMARY:Mathematics\, Software and Softskills For Industrial and Societal Needs
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Motivation and Background\n Technology has become an essential tool for appreciating mathematics in today’s world. It can be used in a variety of ways to improve and enhance the teaching of mathematics. Technology can provide students with opportunities to explore different representations of mathematical ideas and support them in making connections both within and outside of mathematics. The use of technology in teaching mathematics activities may be regarded as a new language of communication in the development and construction of knowledge. Knowledge about the role of technology in the educational process can contribute to better preparation of future teachers in not only choosing the right technology but also the way of teaching. The main goal of the workshop is therefore to foster the connection between mathematics and technology. \nMathematics plays a key role in modern industries which in turn generate big data. Big data is almost impossible to analyze without the use of the most powerful analytical tools\, whose roots stem from mathematics. Unfortunately\, some technical and hands-on manipulation skills of these powerful tools are often not given the due time due to examination pressures and more. As a result\, students do not utilize their mastery. \nCoupled with Kyambogo University’s mission which is “To advance and promote knowledge and development of skills in science\, technology and education and such other fields having regard to quality\, equity\, progress and transformation of society” and the Vision “To be a Center of Academic and Professional Excellence”\, the department of Mathematics has organized this workshop as part of a series to bridge the gap especially for postgraduate students and staff who may be interested in such hands-on knowledge and skills for their research\, data analysis and dissemination of their results. \nObjectives:\n By the end of the workshop\, \n\nPostgraduate students and interested staff should be able to typeset in the tentative LaTex template for the Faculty of Science\nParticipants should be able to visualize and analyze their data using\nParticipants should be able to optimize a simple linear programming problem using AMPL software.\nCommunicate their science in a simple and accessible way to various\n\nOutcomes:\nAfter the workshops\, participants should be able: \n\nTypeset various documents using\nRead\, manipulate and analyze data using\nOptimize some of their investments using AMPL\nAppreciate their responsibility to communicate science accessibly using various platforms such as newspapers\, radio\, TV etc with the aim of increasing research uptake by various stakeholders.\n\nDescription of sub-themes:\n\nTypesetting using LaTex; This is a very powerful typesetting software for typing mathematical equations and more. We hope that a LaTex template for postgraduate theses in the Faculty of Science could be used for uniformity and quality\nData analysis using SPSS; This is one of the most used statistical software for data analysis as evidenced by published articles and Internship reports from students of Statistics.\nLarge scale optimization using AMPL: Decision theory is part of our everyday life in businesses\, industries and more. Introduction to such a software is not only a service for academic growth but household finance as\nScience communication: Communicating science to non-experts has been responsible for unresolved issues around climate change\, GMOs and distortion of scientific research outputs by Equipping graduate students and staff in the Faculty of science with the art of communicating science would increase the uptake of their research output by stakeholders of all kinds.\n\nDescription of the Target Audience\n Academic staff and postgraduate students from the Faculty of Science\, Kyambogo University. \nWorkshop Requirements\nA venue with projector having VGA/HDMI connector\, Internet connection (wifi) Room setup: Computer lab. \nInstructions for participants: Every participant should have a laptop computer since the workshop will be hands-on. However\, those without will use the computers in the computer lab. \nWorkshop Facilitators: Staff from the Department of Mathematics\, Faculty of Science\, Kyambogo University.\nVenue: \nDay 1: NPT (School of Management and Entrepreneurship Conference room )\n\nDay 2:  Faculty of Education Board Room

SUMMARY:The Cultural Heritage Public Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has organised a public lecture under the theme: “African Motherhood Proverbs and Worldview: A Matriarchal Perspectives.“ \nPresentor: \nSr. Dominic Dipio\,  Makerere University Kampala \nEmail: dodipio@yahoo.com \nDiscussant: \nDr Dorothy Atuhura \nEmail: datuhura@kyu.ac.ug \n Abstract \nThe ‘mother’ is a distinct female category that is prevalent in African folklore and art forms. Her prominence is mostly related to her centrality in the family – the basic cell of society. Because of her indelible connection to the children\, she is consequently at the centre of the economy and spirituality of the family/community. The body and soul of the family rests in the mother’s hand. This large space she occupies is evident in proverbs and sayings about her role in African society. Using selected proverbs across African\, this paper examines how life was/is organised around the mother\, even if Africa is\, today\, predominantly\, referred to as a patriarchal society. My selection of proverbs is influenced by the thoughts of Africanist scholars like Cheik Anta Diop\, Ifi Amadiume and Nkiru Nzegwu\, who in their various voices\, argue that Africa was a matriarchal and matrilineal society long before the force of patriarchy eroded it. Folklore\, and particularly proverbs are repositories of a community’s memory that bear traces of older cultures that may still be discernible in the present culture. My analysis of the selected proverbs as pointers to the matriarchal traces of African communities will draw from Heide Goettner-Abendroth’s research on matriarchal societies around the world. I will conclude with comments about the implications of African motherhood proverbs for more balanced gender relations in contemporary Africa. \nKeywords: motherhood\, African proverbs\, African worldview\, matriarchy\, patriarchy

SUMMARY:The Academic & Practical Skills Inter-University Conference (APSIC 2019) For Leather & Leather Products
DESCRIPTION:Over the past years\, Uganda has experienced significant growth as an economy. The country’s economy has been growing by 7% up to 2018\, benefiting from growing commodity exports. \nVisit the event’s Website: www.kyu.ac.ug/apsic2019 \nThe sectors mainly contributing to the growth of the economy include Agriculture\, Services and manufacturing. Leather sub-sector in Uganda has experienced a sluggish growth yet\, the country has a growing number of animals including cattle (14 million)\, goats and sheep (20 million)(Kiraye et al.\, 2018)\, and other ruminants. Approximately 95% of the Ugandan processed hides and skins are exported as partially processed leather (wet blue)(UIA\, 2017; ULVCS\, 2015). Prior to 2008\, 90% of the hides and skins were exported as raw materials(NLLPP\, 2015). In line with the Uganda Vision 2040\, NDP II\, the National Leather and Leather Products Policy 2015\, the Leather Value Chain Strategy 2015-2025 and Agriculture Sector Development Strategic\, the Government has been promoting value addition and exports. The EAC Heads of State Summit has also emphasized value addition\, specifically on the leather value chain. The Africa Leather and Leather products Institute in their new Strategic Plan has emphasized promoting and strengthening the growth of the regional leather value chain. \nUganda’s leather industry is still in its infancy stage of development characterized by poor production equipment and limited value addition. The exported hides and skins from Uganda are usually in their raw and semi-processed forms. Over 90% of leather products are imported from outside Africa\, despite the huge potential in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern African region. Of the 25 million pairs of shoes annually demanded in Uganda\, one million are produced locally and the 24 million are imported mainly from Europe\, North America and Asia. Out of the total import of shoes\, only about 500\,000 pairs are leather shoes. Despite this potential\, most of the finished leather products are imported into the country from Asia\, the European Union and North America. \nValue addition up to the finished leather is the desired goal for Uganda and the region at large. However\, the processing of leather is very polluting and causes harmful impacts both on the environment and human health. A deep analysis to identify the needs and constraints of the leather sector has shown that the core of the problem is that the leather industry in the country is dominated by SMEs with critical lack of expertise and skills with capacity to respond to environmental problems. This eventually affects their competitiveness in international markets\, where sustainability has become an important prerequisite for business viability. This requires capacity building\, research\, innovation and adaptation of inclusive approaches that can offer practical solutions to address social\, economic and environmental challenges while creating employment and sustaining economic growth. \nOn this background\, Kyambogo University in collaboration with Ministry of Trade\, Industry and Cooperatives Uganda\, Ministry of Science\, Technology and Innovations\, Ministry of Agriculture\, Animal Industry and Fisheries\, Ministry of Education and Sports and Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute is planning to host the first Academic and Practical Skills Inter-university Show for Africa Leather and leather products from 7th to 9th August 2019\, in Kampala Uganda. \nRelated Article: Kyambogo to host the first African leather and leather products conference 2019 \n

SUMMARY:PhD Seminar on Spatial Epidemiology: Enhancing Disease Surveillance and Intervention
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nThis study addresses the application of spatial approaches to epidemiology. It pays particular attention to disease surveillance and intervention with regard to four different aspects. First\, spatial epidemiological analyses start with having patient level spatial data recorded upon hospital consultation or admission. In the absence of fine level spatial data\, only coarse level spatial analyses are possible. Such coarse level data from the District Health Information System (DHIS2) was used to investigate the spatial variation of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Tuberculosis (TB) infections in Uganda. From a surveillance standpoint\, such data mask fine-scale heterogeneity and the role of local contextual factors which derails intervention and control programmes\, especially for infectious diseases\, as identification of target foci of transmission and local risk factors are obscured at larger scales. \nSecondly\, to mitigate the effects due to coarse-level data\, we developed a prototype health registry system that allows for the capture of fine-level patient spatial details. The system uses ‘pool’ spatial data that have been collected by the water distribution company in Uganda (NWSC). An Android application developed can be used in the recording of geo-referenced patient details upon admission\, allowing for fine-level spatial epidemiological analyses. \nThirdly\, such epidemiological analyses use more specialised tools to investigate the association between health outcomes and environmental risk factors. Using data from cardiovascular disease (CVD) and air pollution\, the association between air multi-pollutants and CVD hospitalisation\, and the spatial variation of these associations across Sweden was investigated using Poisson-based spatial regression models. The results provided a basis for the recommendation of more locally oriented intervention strategies concerning CVD and air pollution. \nFinally\, for diseases with multiple risk factors\, the effectiveness of intervention lies in accurate quantification of relationships between the risk factors and the health outcome. We demonstrate this aspect by evaluating the relative spatial contribution of Linking Social Capital to elderly mortality in Sweden\, evaluated at the neighbourhood level. Given the often non-linear relations between most diseases and their risk factors\, we employed artificial neural networks. \nThe results of this study demonstrate how spatial approaches to epidemiology provide roadmaps to inform healthcare policy and resource planning through spatially-enabled records and identification of areas with elevated disease risk condition on the place-specific risk factors. \nPresenter: \nAugustus Aturinde\, PhD candidate\, Lund University\, Sweden\n======== \nI Augustus Aturinde will be holding a PhD STUDENT seminar at KYAMBOGO UNIVERSITY\, Faculty of Engineering\, Department of Lands and Architectural Studies (DLAS).\nThis is\, therefore\, to inform and invite you to attend. \nVenue: DLAS\, KYAMBOGO UNIVERSITY\nDate: Tuesday\, 28th May 2019\nTime: 11:00am

SUMMARY:Artistic Representation/s Otherwise Publishing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Department of Art and Industrial Design\, Kyambogo University\, this inaugural workshop series will bring together Ugandan artist/scholars with international artist/scholars (Canada and US) to identify and share under-represented artistic research coming out of Uganda. Responding to the rise of epistemologies from the Global South\, Artistic Representation/s Otherwise (ARO) will be devoted to exploring de-coloniality and representation through the theme: (Re)Writing Ourselves and Our Works. \nWe will ask: How might we register artistic research at work in Uganda\, in a global academy that still privileges Western epistemological traditions? Taking up Ngugi was Thiong’o’s call to decenter Western modernity to prioritize African creativity\, we will register current and resurgent artistic research by creating a collaborative space for writing open texts that share local/Ugandan/African ways of knowing “otherwise.” Providing collaborators with opportunities to think through theoretical and methodological issues vital to their diverse research projects\, ARO will guide inquiries into the role of representation based in image and text and will support the creation and compilation of decolonial artistic narratives\, dialogues and collections to be published leading international journals. \nPROF.
