SUMMARY:Public Lecture: Translating Science into Policy and Practice
DESCRIPTION:Kyambogo University is on September 27\, 2022 set to host an online discussion on translating policy into practice. \nThe discussion is expected to attract researchers and lawmakers from across the globe. \nThe discussion will be hosted by the Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo University\, Prof. Eli Katunguka. Some of the discussants will include Dr. Miria Matembe\, a former Member of Parliament\, Dr. Daniel Slunge and Prof. Sofia Boqvist from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Dr. Judith Irene Nagasha from Kyambogo University. The Director of Research and Graduating training at Kyambogo University\, Prof. Bosco Bua is also expected to weigh in on the conversation on how research can be translated to policy. \n \nThe Public lecture follows a series of pieces of training for researchers on how to translate their research findings into policy.  With funding from Agriculture for Food Security (AgriFose 2030)\, Kyambogo University partnered with the University of Gothenburg in Sweden to offer this training. The exercise saw researchers for Kyambogo University\, Makerere University and the University of Nairobi receive this training. \nResearch is imperative because new problems occur every day hence the need for implementable solutions and suggestions to tackle the new problems that arise and inform policy. Globally\, today there is demand including in African countries for universities to carry out more relevant and impactful research which many are doing. However\, while universities engage in impactful research\, the major challenge has been how to translate their research findings into policy and practice. The practice has been designing and conducting quality research that is disseminated through peer-reviewed conference presentations and publications yet most times policy-makers and practitioners hardly attend these conferences and may never read the published findings. At the end of the day\, research findings are not translated into policy and practice. \nWith the training\, Kyambogo University sought to develop the skills of scientists to communicate their research findings to policymakers and leaders through stakeholder interaction and policy engagement activities. This course will enhance the skills of scientists and innovators to create opportunities for engagement between academic researchers and policymakers. \nThe 3-months course started on March 10\, 2022\, with the training of over 30 researchers from Kyambogo University\, Makerere University\, Nairobi University and the University of Gothenburg.    The training covers the following areas \n\nResearch and policy linkages\nThe role of research and researchers; opportunities for engagement\n\n\nUnderstanding the policy landscape\n\n\nModels and strategies for stakeholder interaction and policy engagement\nTools for engagement; Science communication- policy briefs\, press releases\, elevator pitch\, use of social media\, stakeholder mapping.\nPlanning for and measuring the impact of research on stakeholder interaction and policy engagement.\n\nIt is envisaged that the next training will involve more researchers within the country and the African continent. \nContact person \nJudith Irene Natasha\, Kyambogo University\, judith.nagasha@gmail.com\, +256 782321113

SUMMARY:Workshop on Innovations for a New Age of the Chemical Industry
DESCRIPTION:Chemicals and Fuels from the Sun and Recycled Carbon Dioxide \nKyambogo University will be hosting a delegation of researchers from seven European countries on the 4th of November 2022. The researchers\, working jointly with Kyambogo University in a European Union-funded project called FlowPhotoChem\, are developing an integrated system of reactors to convert sunlight and carbon dioxide (CO2) into chemicals and fuels\, such as ethylene\, methanol\, ethanol and formic acid\, among others. Ethlylene is a high value chemical with a high global demand. During the workshop the FlowPhotoChem partners will showcase breakthrough innovations in the manufacture chemicals using carbon dioxide (CO2) and sunlight. It will also serve as a networking platform to strengthen and foster new collaborations between the European partners and African researchers and businesses to co-develop collaborative projects\, technologies and market frameworks that advance the sustainable utilization of chemicals and fuels from sunlight and CO2. The conversion of recycled carbon dioxide into fuels and chemicals using renewable energies is of significant importance in decreasing net carbon dioxide emissions\, a key driver of global warming and climate change. Africa is particularly well placed to be a market leader in implementing solar to chemicals conversion technologies due to the seasonal abundance of sunshine and the need to strengthen the continents energy supply and security. \nTo register or get more details about this event\, click the link: INNOVATIONS FOR A NEW AGE OF THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY – IN PERSON Tickets\, Fri 4 Nov 2022 at 09:00 | Eventbrite \nFor more details on the FlowPhotoChem project: https://www.flowphotochem.eu/ \n  \nDownload the workshop profile and programme form here!

SUMMARY:Public Lecture: Harnessing Carbon Market for Climate Action in Uganda
DESCRIPTION:Uganda is exploring the potential of carbon markets to accelerate climate action and sustainable development. The government has initiated several efforts\, including the formulation of a National Carbon Market Policy Framework and Strategy and the establishment of a carbon registry. \nCarbon markets allow the buying and selling of carbon credits—each representing the right to emit a specific amount of greenhouse gases. These markets promote emissions reduction by offering financial incentives to companies and countries that lower their carbon footprints. However\, their success relies heavily on transparency and accountability to ensure proper verification of credits. \nThis public lecture seeks to bridge the gap between academia\, government\, civil society\, the private sector\, and development partners in advancing evidence-based climate action. It aims to inspire collaboration and research-driven engagement in carbon market initiatives and policy development in Uganda. \nSpeaker:\nDr. Denis Tukahikaho — CLE | ESG | Executive Director & Country Lead\, East Africa\, Climate Hub International – UK \nModerator:\nDr. Mary Therese Kaggwa – Lecturer\, Environmental Science Department\, Faculty of Science\, Kyambogo University \nObjectives\n\nEnhance understanding of carbon markets\, their benefits\, and associated challenges.\nShare experiences and best practices in designing and implementing carbon market projects.\nDiscuss policy and regulatory frameworks necessary to strengthen carbon market development in Uganda.\nIdentify opportunities for collaboration and partnerships among key stakeholders.\n\nExpected Outcomes\n\nIncreased awareness of the role of carbon markets in supporting climate change mitigation and adaptation.\nStrengthened knowledge sharing between academia and industry\, fostering strategic research in the sector.\nImproved collaboration and partnerships in developing Uganda’s carbon market ecosystem.\nPolicy insights to inform frameworks that support sustainable carbon trading and climate investment.\n\nJoin Us\nThis lecture will provide valuable insights into how Uganda can harness carbon markets to drive meaningful climate action and sustainable growth. \nKyambogo University invites students\, researchers\, policymakers\, and environmental stakeholders to be part of this impactful discussion.

SUMMARY:From Shelf to Field: Kyambogo University and AgriFose2030 to host an impact event.
DESCRIPTION:In an era defined by geopolitical uncertainty\, volatile funding landscapes\, and compounding global food security crises\, a critical question looms over academia: How do we ensure that life-saving agricultural research doesn’t just sit on library shelves\, but actually makes it into the hands of farmers? \nOn May 28\, AgriFoSe30 and Kyambogo University will host a vital hybrid event to answer that exact question. \nOver the course of 1.5 hours\, academic leaders\, researchers\, and policymakers will come together to unpack a proven methodology that bridges the gap between scientific theory and real-world food systems transformation. \nFor the past decade\, AgriFoSe has been pioneering a unique science translation methodology designed to boost food security in low-income contexts. Tested across 17 projects in 12 countries\, this approach ensures that agricultural research is demand-driven\, evidence-based\, and structured for maximum policy and practical impact. \nWhile the program historically focused on supporting individual researchers and projects\, it is now driving institutionalisation with the goal of embedding science translation directly into the higher-level structures of universities across Sweden\, Kenya\, Uganda\, Zimbabwe\, and Southeast Asia. \nBy adopting this institutional methodology\, universities can ensure their research naturally attracts fragmented global funding\, informs national policy\, and delivers tangible innovations to local communities. \nThe event will anchor its concepts in a powerful\, real-world success story from Uganda. Attendees will discover how locally grounded evidence synthesis led by the Kyambogo University hub was put into practice by collaborating with public and private stakeholders. \nThe Speakers include Professor Augustus Nuwagaba\, the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda\, who is the keynote speaker\, Professor Eli Katunguka\, the Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo University\, Professor David Okello Owiny\, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Gulu University\, Programme Director of AgriFose2030\, Dr. Elisabeth Rajala\, Dr. Judith Nagasha\, Senior Lecturer at Kyambogo University who is also the hub leader for AgriFose Uganda hub among others.
