Kyambogo lecturer Dr. Justus Masa – named one of the best scientists, innovators in Africa
Dr. Justus Masa, a Ugandan Lecturer at Kyambogo University and Senior Group Leader of Electrocatalysis and Energy at Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany is among the 17 NEF Fellow award winners at this year’s Next Einstein Forum (NEF) Global Gathering in Kigali, Rwanda.
The event took place at the NEF Fellow Global Gathering March 27, 2018 at the Kigali Convention Centre in Kigali, Rwanda. The NEF fellows programme is a two year programme which recognizes and awards Africa’s young scientists, innovators and technologists.
Who is Masa?
Dr. Masa earned a doctorate (PhD), with a distinction (summa cum laude), in Natural Sciences from Ruhr-University Bochum (Germany) in 2012, a M.Sc. degree in Chemistry (2008) from Makerere University, and a B.Sc. degree, Industrial Chemistry major (2003), also from the same Ugandan university.
He was a Visiting Scholar in the Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Laboratory at the University of Oxford in the summer of 2013 and worked in the Research Group of Prof. Richard G. Compton.
In January 2014, he returned to Ruhr-University Bochum as a Postdoctoral Researcher, and later rose to the position of a Senior Research Scientist and Leader of the Electrocatalysis and Energy Conversion Group at the Center for Electrochemical Sciences (CES) in the Department of Analytical Chemistry.
He is a co-inventor of four patents, three of which won the award for the best innovations at Ruhr-University Bochum in 2010, 2014 and 2017.
Dr. Masa was recently selected a fellow of the Next Einstein Forum (NEF) for the 2017-2019, a recognition of Africa’s most outstanding scientists.
His core research is in the field of electrocatalysis and energy conversion, especially the rational design of advanced low-cost catalysts and electrode materials for electrochemical energy systems, from portable applications to stationary mini-grid and grid-level energy storage, including fuel cells, electrolyzers (power to gas energy conversion), rechargeable metal-air batteries and redox flow batteries.
He is a co-author of two book chapters and has published at least 70 peer-reviewed scientific papers in international journals.
