Kyambogo University has started implementing the new structure replacing the one which has been in operation since 2006. This makes it the first among the public universities to implement the new structure.

This new structure was approved by the University Council in August 2020 and later by the Ministry of Public Service in November 2020 as part of its plan to restructure public universities.

The university academic structure has changed through relocation and the creation of new faculties, schools, departments, and academic and administrative units.

In the old structure, the university had six Faculties and two Schools, and now the schools have increased to six and one Institute has been created.  These include School of Built Environment, School of Vocational Studies, School of Computing and Information Science, School of Education, School of Art and Industrial Design, School of Management and Entrepreneurship and the Institute of Distance Education, E-learning and Learning Centers. The Faculties include; Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Education.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eli Katunguka, while in the Consultative meeting with the Deans of Faculties/Schools/Institute said that in order to become Centre of academic and professional excellence, the research function should be given the priority it deserves. He also noted that a lot has changed in addition to the massive growth of the university, which necessitated the restructuring.

The restructuring has also seen the number of academic departments increase from 33 to 56 in the new academic structure. The Non-Teaching staff establishment is 792 positions having reduced by 59 positions which is 7%. And the academic staff establishment has gone up from 1,281 to 1,772 positions which makes an increase of 491 positions

The validation of teaching staff was completed and the validation of Non-Teaching staff will be starting on 19th January 2022.
