The Directorate of Gender Mainstreaming, together with the entire Kyambogo University community intends to join the rest of the world to commemorate this year’s (2025) International Women’s Day (IWD) at Kyambogo University on Thursday 27th March 2025. International Women’s Day is the day when the world celebrates the amazing social, cultural, economic and political achievements of women while also campaigning for accelerated progress towards gender equity and equality.

The theme for this Year’s Women’s Day is “Accelerating economic empowerment of female staff and students by strengthening Education, Training and Skills Development at Kyambogo University”. The theme is aligned with the UN 2025 International Women’s Day Theme: “for ALL women and girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment”. This year’s theme calls for action that can unlock equal rights, power and opportunities for all women and girls, and a feminist future where no one is left behind. Central to this vision is empowering the current and next generation, particularly the young women, as catalysts for lasting change.

Speaking to the Director of Gender Mainstreaming Dr. Deborah Nakalyowa-Luggya, she said that on Thursday 27th March 2025, we shall celebrate IWD by envisaging a future in which accelerated action towards the realization of rights, gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls will foster the implementation of meaningful changes for bold, decisive action that positively impacts gender equality, while ensuring that women are not left behind in the post-pandemic recovery, economically.

By accelerating action towards the economic empowerment of female staff and students at Kyambogo University, we focus on emphasizing the need for an intersectional approach, which ensures that all female staff and students are equipped with knowledge. This can be through training and skills development in entrepreneurial ventures, that can enhance their economic advancement and independence, in a sustainable manner.   The theme mainly serves as a powerful reminder that time is running out to meet the global gender priorities specifically SDG 5 which focuses on achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls.

Kyambogo University as an institution is reminded to quicken the pace of progress for the realization of equal rights and empowerment of its female staff and students, particularly those most marginalized, such as People with Disabilities (PWDs).
