Kyambogo University is set to host the 15th INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR THE STUDY OF BEHAVIOURAL DEVELOPMENT (ISSBD) African Regional Workshop under the theme; “Positive Parenting for Contextually Relevant Childhoods in Emerging Contexts: The Role of Intervention Research by Early and Mid-Career Scholars.” The workshop will be held from 10th -12th August 2023.

According to Assoc. Professor Godfrey Ejuu, who is the Convener and also the ISSBD Professional Development Fellow at Kyambogo University, the main goal of this conference will be to explore how best to utilize advances in Science and Technology in support of Human Socio-cultural interdependence and the secondary goal is to support early and mid-career scholars’ research capacity building for human development.

He further stated that the expected participants are African Early Career Scholars who have an interest in human development. The target will specifically be individuals who are either (1) undertaking graduate studies in a field relevant to research on human development or (2) individuals who have received a graduate research degree of relevance to human development within the past seven years. All abstracts will undergo a blind review by two experts who will advise on their suitability for presentation at the conference. Based on the scores, the best abstracts will be selected in conformity with the regional balance. Concession is being made for the Ivorian PhD group of 12 participants because they have been part of the African early career scholars mentorship programmes working with the PD fellows supporting the organisation of the workshop.

“During this workshop, participants will be supported on how to develop proposals and write grants that can promote intervention research in emerging contexts. Participants will also be provided with support to develop generic skills needed to become effective researchers, specifically in the areas of conference presentations and Implementation Science. A few excellent abstracts on human development (including proposals focused across the life span and from relevant disciplines) will be accepted for special poster panel sessions”. Assoc Prof Ejuu added.

The chairperson of the local organizing committee Assoc. Professor Joyce Ayikoru, who also is the Dean of School of Education, Kyambogo University noted that During the 12th ISSBD African Regional Workshop that took place in Wineba, Ghana in 2017 which focused on Researching into Adaptive Behaviours in Contexts of Change and the 11th workshop that took place in Nairobi focused on Advancing Research on Vulnerable Populations by Early- to Mid-Career Scholars in Africa.
