Kyambogo University is participating in the National Science week at Kololo Independence Grounds, bringing together innovators, researchers, and entrepreneurs to highlight Uganda’s advancements in science, technology, and innovation.

This annual event is organized by the Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Secretariat under the Office of the President, under the theme; “Made in Uganda: Innovation to Market” The event that started on Sunday June 15th will run until Friday 20th, June 2025, with emphasis on the country’s growing capacity to transform local ideas into commercially viable products. Over the six-day exhibition, visitors will get a chance to engage with innovators and developers, buy locally made products, and explore investment opportunities.

Participants include over 300 Ugandan innovators, leading researchers, and students from institutions such as Kyambogo University Faculty of Engineering, School of Vocational studies, and Faculty of Science. Their presence underscores Uganda’s commitment to nurturing home-grown scientific talent and promoting entrepreneurship.

PROJECT 1: Hybrid Solar-Wind Energy for Homes by Baraka Harris K, Graduate Mechatronics Engineering

Access to reliable and sustainable electricity remains a major challenge for millions of households, especially in rural and underserved areas. This project introduces a residential-scale solar-wind hybrid generation system designed to provide clean, consistent power to homes—day and night.

This hybrid approach ensures energy reliability, reduces dependence on fossil fuels, and supports sustainability goals.

PROJECT 2: The KIID Infant Incubator by Baraka Harris K. & Dong Isaiah Aldrine, Graduates in Biomedical and Mechatronics Engineering.

A life-saving innovation built by East African engineers to meet the urgent needs of new-born care in underserved hospitals and clinics.

Every year, thousands of premature and low-birth-weight babies across Sub-Saharan Africa die due to preventable complications like hypothermia. The lack of affordable, reliable incubators especially in facilities without stable electricity, continues to cost lives.

The KIID Infant Incubator is a locally engineered, cost-effective incubator designed specifically for low-resource environments.

PROJECT 4: Harnessing Machine Learning for Early Detection and Monitoring of Myocardial Infarctions, Omara Christian Kenneth & Ogwal Emmanuel, Biomedical and Mechatronics Engineering.

Myocardial infarctions (MI) result from underlying cardiovascular disease (CVD), whose growing prevalence is often associated with poor prognosis and delayed diagnosis. Accurate and timely detection of MI is critical. To address this, these students developed a machine learning-based algorithm capable of automatically diagnosing MI using data from a 3-lead electrocardiogram (ECG).

Other activities during this year’s exhibition include panel discussions, and live demonstrations of pioneering technologies. Government officials, investors, and international delegates are also engaging in conversations on scaling local innovations to global markets.

The exhibition has already featured innovative projects in renewable energy, health technologies, agriculture, and artificial intelligence, showcasing Uganda’s potential to become a regional leader in technological advancement.
