In a bold move to bridge the gap between abstract textbook theories and real-world ecological dynamics, Kyambogo University’s Department of Environmental Sciences has just concluded a high-octane, five-day experiential field study circuit across the ecologically diverse landscapes of Western Uganda.
The intensive expedition brought Year One students pursuing Environmental Sciences, Technology, and Management face-to-face with the raw, vibrating realities of Uganda’s most critical ecosystems. Led by the dynamic Ms. Brenda M.Mukisa, and assisted by a dedicated faculty team including Mr. Rodrick Muhumure, Mr. Olweny Henry, and Mr. Bakaki Fahad, the academic safari transformed the Rwenzori region particularly Kasese District into a living, breathing lecture room.

The journey kicked off with a deep dive into the wild. In Queen Elizabeth National Park, students traded their notebooks for binoculars, participating in an adrenaline-pumping game drive and an exclusive lion tracking exercise. This wasn’t just sightseeing; it was an immersive masterclass in:
- Biodiversity monitoring and wildlife behavior tracking.
- The complex mechanics of protected area management.
- Balancing fragile ecosystem interactions amid human-wildlife conflict.
The scientific voyage shifted from land to water with a boat cruise along the iconic Kazinga Channel. Drifting past pods of hippos, bathing elephants, and a kaleidoscope of bird species, the freshers analyzed aquatic biodiversity up close, gaining first-hand insights into how ecotourism fuels national conservation funding.

The expeditionary force then pivoted toward the intersection of human survival and geology at the historic Lake Katwe. Here, students stood at the edge of the ancient crater lake, dissecting indigenous salt extraction methods. Moving from static waters to dynamic forces, the team tackled the geography of River Nyamwamba. Known for its history of catastrophic, climate-driven flooding, the river served as a stark, real-time laboratory. Students mapped out river dynamics, erosion patterns, and disaster risk management, analyzing how climate change directly threatens the livelihoods of the Rwenzori sub-region.
At the Kiwa Heritage Site, the young scientists explored the powerful intersection of indigenous knowledge and environmental conservation, discovering how cultural history has preserved natural sanctuaries for generations. After a brief, mandatory scientific pause at the Uganda Equator to witness the geographical wonders of the world’s central latitude, the grand finale awaited them in the depths of the Albertine Rift.

According to Dr. Grace Kizito the head of department of Environmental Sciences, this five-day circuit proves that Kyambogo University is moving away from traditional “chalk-and-talk” education. By thrusting first-year students directly into the field, the Department is actively fostering critical thinking, robust field research skills, and an authentic passion for nature.
As these freshers return to Kampala, they carry more than just mud on their boots they return equipped with the practical exposure, innovative mindsets, and professional drive essential to becoming Uganda’s next generation of impactful environmental stewards, researchers, and climate innovators.
