In a significant move to strengthen international research and academic excellence, leadership teams from BOKU University (University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna) and Kyambogo University met today to formalize and deepen their long-standing partnership.

The meeting, characterized by a shared vision for a “green economy,” focused on how the two institutions can leverage their unique strengths to tackle global challenges like climate change, clean energy, and food security.

Rector Dr. Eva Schulev-Steindl, leading the BOKU delegation, expressed her enthusiasm for the institutional bond, noting that Uganda occupies a “core role” in BOKU’s African engagement strategy. “BOKU is one of Europe’s leading universities for sustainability, linking scientific, technical, and socio-economic expertise,” Dr. Schulev-Steindl remarked. “Our international activities are not just about mobility; they are partnership-based concepts integrated into our core research.”

She highlighted that the collaboration is already yielding fruit in East Africa’s clean energy sector, specifically focusing on the “Reuse, Recycle” philosophy. With over 850 current research projects, BOKU aims to bring its innovation in the green economy to the heart of Kampala.

Kyambogo University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eli Katunguka, welcomed the Austrian delegation, highlighting the transformative impact the partnership has already had on the institution. With a student body of over 30,000, Kyambogo has established itself as a powerhouse in engineering, science, and education.

“Many of our students have already benefited from this relationship,” Prof. Katunguka stated. “Specifically, the joint supervision of PhD students by BOKU professors has been a game-changer. While PhD completion times are often a challenge, these partnerships ensure our scholars achieve their goals on time.”

The dialogue outlined several key pillars for the next phase of the collaboration: Capacity Building: Strengthening the skills of young researchers and enhancing institutional strength through the newly created Grants Office.

Joint Research Grants: Leveraging BOKU’s status as an EU partner to successfully bid for competitive international research funding.

Exchange Programs: Expanding the flow of graduate students and faculty between Vienna and Kampala to foster a global exchange of ideas.
