In a move set to redefine technical and vocational education across the continent, Kyambogo University (KyU) recently hosted a delegation from Accra Technical University (ATU), Ghana. The meeting, centered on fostering Pan-African academic excellence, laid the groundwork for a robust strategic partnership aimed at research, innovation, and industrial growth.
The session opened with a detailed presentation by Dr. Judith Nagasha, who outlined a comprehensive roadmap for the partnership. The proposed collaboration is built on five pillars designed to benefit both faculty and the student body: Joint Research Projects: Addressing continental challenges through shared data and expertise, Dual Degree Programs: Offering students a competitive edge with international qualifications, Innovation & Incubation: Creating hubs for startups and entrepreneurial ventures, Industry Partnerships: Bridging the gap between the lecture room and the workplace, Staff & Student Exchange: Promoting cultural and academic cross-pollination.
Addressing the delegates, Kyambogo’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eli Katunguka-Rwakishaya, emphasized the university’s unique position in the Ugandan educational landscape. He highlighted KyU’s dominance in Special Needs Education, Engineering, and Vocational Training.
Prof. Katunguka noted a significant shift in the university’s strategy: “As a way of growth, we have phased out many diplomas to maintain only the unique ones not offered elsewhere. We are encouraging our departments to seek partnerships and grow through collaboration, particularly in Engineering, which stands to benefit greatly from improved research and industrial ties.” He expressed his gratitude to the ATU team for choosing Kyambogo and confirmed that a reciprocal visit to Ghana is already in the works to solidify these ties.

Representing Accra Technical University, Vice Chancellor Engr. Prof. Amevi Acakpovi shared the impressive credentials of his institution. Currently ranked as the 4th best university in Ghana and the 28th in Sub-Saharan Africa by Times Higher Education, ATU brings a wealth of experience in applied sciences. “We are committed to providing a world-class education that empowers students to make a positive impact,” Prof. Acakpovi stated. He detailed an ambitious agenda for the partnership, including: Academic collaboration; Joint curriculum development, Staff and students’ mobility, Joint research innovations, Capacity building, Conferences and knowledge exchange, Industry and practical exposure, applied research collaboration, Exchange of resources and expertise, Joint funding and project development, Institutional development and Networking and strategic linkages.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to “Applied Research Collaboration” and “Joint Project Development.” By pooling resources and expertise, Kyambogo University and Accra Technical University are not just signing an agreement; they are building a bridge between East and West Africa that promises to transform the vocational and technical sectors for generations to come.
