Capacity Building for Competitive and Sustainable Leather Value Chain in Uganda and Kenya
Overview
Kyambogo University (KyU, Uganda) and Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT, Kenya) invite applications for competitive postgraduate training opportunities in Leather Science and Technology. The programme aims to build capacity in sustainable leather production, value chain competitiveness, and interdisciplinary research. Successful candidates will be awarded scholarships to support their studies. Admissibility will be strictly pegged on meeting the programme eligibility criteria at DeKUT.
Programme Offered
- MSc in Leather Technology – Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT), Kenya Duration: Maximum of 2 years.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be citizens of Uganda
- Hold prior training in leather science, leather technology, or related fields of science in Chemistry and Biology.
- Must have obtained a GPA of 3.60 and above
- Be young scholars (preferably women, persons with disabilities, or individuals under 35 years).
- Candidates from marginalized areas will have an added advantage.

- Innovations for eco-friendly leather processing.
- Reduction of chemical and water use.
- Sustainable Practices in Leather Tanning
- Alternatives to hazardous tanning agents.
- Improved environmental compliance.
- Competitive Leather Value Chains in Uganda and Kenya
- Strengthening local and regional leather industries.
- Enhancing market competitiveness.
- Solid Waste Management in Tanneries
- Waste Valorization and Resource Recovery.
- Conversion of tannery solid waste (sludge, shavings, trimmings) into value-added products such as biofertilizers, biogas, and composites.
- Energy recovery from tannery waste streams.
- Circular economy approaches for leather by-products.

- A detailed curriculum vitae.
- Copies of academic transcripts and certificates.
- A statement of purpose outlining research interests aligned with the focus areas.
