In an inspiring achievement, Mr. Timothy Obbo, a recent graduate from Kyambogo University, has been awarded the prestigious title of Best Student in the Faculty of Engineering. Timothy graduated in 2024 with a Bachelor’s degree in Process and Chemical Engineering with a CGPA of 4.75. His remarkable academic performance, combined with a dedication to excellence, earned him the honor of being recognized by the Engineers Registration Board (ERB) during the World Engineers Day celebration held at Hotel Africana on March 4th, 2025.

This recognition comes as a testament to Timothy’s relentless pursuit of academic excellence throughout his time at Kyambogo University. Known for his passion and commitment to engineering, Timothy’s achievements reflect the spirit of hard work and innovation that the university strives to instill in its students.

His innovation on design and fabrication of an automated Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) fire suppression system captured the attention of many stakeholders in the industry and the university through the Faculty of Engineering Patents coordinator, Eng. Mercy Kitimbo Asiku assisted him obtain a patent for his innovation from Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) labelled number [UG/P/2024/13].

The Journey to Success

Mr. Obbo’s journey to becoming the best student in the Faculty of Engineering was no easy feat. Graduating with top honors in a highly competitive field such as Process and Chemical Engineering requires a combination of rigorous coursework, hands-on experience, and a genuine passion for the field. Throughout his studies, Timothy distinguished himself with outstanding performances in both theoretical exams and practical assignments, displaying a deep understanding of the complexities of chemical processes and engineering systems.

His was actively involved in numerous university activities and exhibitions like 2024 National Council for Higher Education Exhibition in Mbale District, 2024 Oil & Gas skills Expo hosted by Kyambogo University, the 2023 National Science week organized by the Science, Technology and Innovation Secretariat at Kololo independence grounds.

His ability to analyze and solve intricate engineering problems, along with his contribution to various academic projects, set him apart from his peers. Timothy’s professors (Dr. William Wanasolo) and mentors (Eng. Mercy Kitimbo Asiku) at Kyambogo University have praised his work ethic, analytical skills, and leadership qualities, noting that he consistently demonstrated a strong ability to grasp and apply challenging concepts.

Recognition by the Engineers Registration Board

On March 4th, 2025, during the grand celebration of World Engineers Day at Hotel Africana, the Engineers Registration Board (ERB) honored Timothy for his exceptional achievements. The event brought together leading figures in the engineering profession, as well as students and graduates from various engineering faculties across Uganda. Timothy’s award serves as a beacon of inspiration for future engineers and highlights the significance of academic excellence in shaping the future of Uganda’s engineering sector.

The Engineers Registration Board, which plays a vital role in regulating and promoting engineering practice in Uganda, has long been a supporter of young talent and innovation in the field. By awarding Timothy, the title of Best Student, the ERB not only recognized his academic prowess but also underscored the importance of developing skilled and knowledgeable engineers who can contribute to the advancement of the nation.
