The Department of Human Nutrition and Home Economics promotes inter-disciplinary professional development with an emphasis on knowledge transfer and skills development. It offers both day and evening programmes.
PROGRAMMES OFFERED IN THE DEPARTMENT
As of August 2018, the department was offering the following newly approved Programmes:
Master of Science in Human Nutrition (2 years)
This programme comprises one year of coursework and one of research. It targets graduates with a Bachelors degree in Human Nutrition, Dietetics, Agriculture, Food Science, Food processing technology, Medicine, Nursing, Health Sciences, Botany, Dentistry and other biological Sciences
Bachelor of Hotel and Institutional Catering (3 years)
This programme aims at developing professionals to fill the growing demand for hotel and institutional catering skilled manpower. Entry requirements into the programme include A-Level certificate holders, Diploma holders in Hotel and Institutional catering and any other diploma in a relevant field.
Original but restructured programmes being offered include;
Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition and Dietetics (4 years)
This programme targets both professionals with a minimum of a 2-years Diploma in biological and health sciences related disciplines from recognised and accredited institutions, and holders of the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) in the science-based disciplines.
Bachelor of Vocational Studies in Home Economics with Education (3 years)
This programme aims at developing a multi-skilled and dynamic professional with pedagogical skills in Home economics. These professionals are able to transfer skills through teaching, vocational training and innovations development. Entry requirements into the programme are; A Diploma with an equivalent of a 2-years training in Home economics related courses and the UACE in the sciences subjects.
Bachelor of Education in (Home Economics) with Education (2 years)
This is an in-service programme that empowers teachers of Home economics with more integrated pedagogical skills and Home Economics to meet the needs of all-round skilled professionals. It targets teachers with a Diploma in Home Economics (Education) from a recognised and accredited institution.
Diploma in Hotel and Institutional Catering (2 years)
This programme aims at providing learners with skills in hospitality and catering so as to support growth and innovations in the sector. It targets holders of a 1-year Certificate in Catering or related disciplines, and holders of the UACE in Arts or Science subject combinations.
Diploma in Fashion and Apparels Design (2 years)
This programme aims at empowering learners with practical skills to design different types of apparels in the clothing and fashion industry. It contributes to the growth of the industry by ensuring knowledge transfer and continuous skills development. It targets Certificate holders and direct entrants who hold a UACE.
Diploma in Home Economics, Vocational Education Secondary (2 years)
This programme was previously implemented as the Diploma in Education (DES) with Home Economics. It was reviewed to include units in basic pedagogy and didactics so that the graduates can practice in both secondary schools and vocational institutions, promoting home economics skills development.
Post-Graduate Diploma in Vocational Pedagogy (1 year)
The programme targets on-job graduates and aims at equipping them with pedagogical skills. It involves a mentorship programme that is implemented through a collaborative partnership with institutions through partnership.
The dropped courses include the Certificate in Garment Design (CGD) and Certificate in Hotel and Institutional Catering (CHIC).
OUR FUTURE PROSPECTS
The Department strives to grow into fully-fledged skills and competency development Faculty with specialised centres offering the following programmes: Human Nutrition and Dietetics and Research; Hospitality, Catering and Tourism and Research, Home Economics Pedagogy and Research; Family life and Consumer Studies and Research; and Clothing, Fashion and Cosmetology studies and Research.
