Kyambogo University’s Faculty of Engineering continues to cement its reputation as a hub of practical innovation and socially responsive engineering. This year, at the 2025 Appropriate Technologies Expo and Innovation Lounge, held under the theme “Homemade Innovations for a Sustainable Future,” a group of final-year students proudly showcased cutting-edge, locally developed technologies poised to tackle pressing community challenges with sustainable solutions.
The expo, an annual event that brings together innovators, academia, industry stakeholders, and development partners, provided a platform for young engineers to demonstrate not only technical prowess but also a deep understanding of community needs.
Intelligent Irrigation System
With agriculture at the heart of Uganda’s economy, an innovation by a team of Chemical engineering students stole the show. Their Intelligent Irrigation System uses a network of soil moisture sensors, real-time weather data, and automated valves to optimize water usage for crops. Controlled via a mobile app, the system ensures that water is only applied when and where it’s needed — reducing waste and increasing yield, especially critical for smallholder farmers.

Solar-Wind Hybrid Power Generation System for Residential Loads
In a bid to solve Uganda’s intermittent power supply issues, another group of Electrical engineering students developed a Solar-Wind Hybrid System tailored for household use. This compact solution combines photovoltaic panels and a vertical-axis wind turbine with a smart inverter system to seamlessly switch between sources. Ideal for rural and off-grid areas, it ensures 24/7 power availability using renewable sources.

Multi-user Pre-Paid Electrical Energy Meter
A standout in the energy management category was the Multi-user Pre-paid Electrical Energy Meter. Unlike traditional meters, this device allows multiple tenants to share a single meter while independently monitoring and managing their consumption. It uses RFID cards for top-up and includes a user-friendly interface for balance inquiries and consumption tracking — a cost-effective solution for rental properties.

Dynamic and Cost-effective Neonatal Incubator
Health technology also featured prominently. Addressing Uganda’s high infant mortality rate, a biomedical engineering team unveiled a Dynamic Neonatal Incubator. This low-cost, locally sourced device includes automatic temperature and humidity control, and remote monitoring capabilities. It’s an affordable alternative for under-resourced hospitals and rural clinics. Its competitive advantage is that it can be retrofitted into ambulances to facilitate referrals from one health facility to another.

Head Motion Controlled Wheelchair
Empowering persons with disabilities, one group introduced a Head Motion Controlled Wheelchair. The system utilizes an accelerometer sensor to interpret head movements — forward, backward, left, and right — allowing individuals with limited limb mobility to navigate their environment with independence and dignity. This innovation has already garnered interest from rehabilitation centers.

A multi parameter Petrometer
The multi-parameter petrometer is a device that was developed to ease the work of a petrol station manager in that it gives him the ability to monitor as well as effectively operate the petrol station without directly being on ground by giving him the ability to monitor all important aspects of the petrol station such as sales, amount of remaining oil as well as safety at the petrol station.
Semi-automatic Chain Link Fence Making Machine
Finally, solving a problem often overlooked, mechanical engineering students presented a Semi-Automatic Chain Link Fence Making Machine. Designed for small-scale manufacturers and local artisans, the machine automates wire twisting, locking and weaving, reducing production time and labor costs. It’s a step forward in promoting local manufacturing and employment. Its competitive advantage is that it facilitates manufacturing of Chain Link fences on site.

These student-led innovations reflect Kyambogo University’s commitment to “hands-on, minds-on” engineering education. The fusion of academic knowledge with community-centered design demonstrates the potential of local talent in driving sustainable development.
As the world seeks greener, smarter, and more inclusive technologies, the work of Kyambogo University’s budding engineers offers a powerful reminder: the future is homemade — and it’s bright.
