“In an era where science, technology and innovation continue to redefine the way we live, work, and interact, there is a pressing need to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical applications of these fields.” Says Dr. Atim

“This festival’s theme aligns seamlessly with the national development agenda,” Hon. Muyingo said. “The government remains committed to supporting scientific innovation and fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors.”

The Chairperson of the University Council, Prof. Fred Wabwire Mangen, praised the transformation of Uganda’s education system and emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing research. He further said that integrating technology into agriculture, whether through improved seed development or through digital platforms for market access, can improve the productivity, quality, and competitiveness of our agricultural produce in global markets. On behalf of the 6th University Council, he pledged ongoing support for innovation-driven events like the STEAM Festival.

Representing the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jutus Kwetegyeka, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, praised top management and stakeholders for their continued support. He emphasized the importance of such platforms in translating academic theory into physical innovations and reiterated the university’s dedication to integrating AI into education for increased efficiency.

“Science and innovation are the driving engines of our country’s economic growth,” Prof. Kwetegyeka stated. However, he noted ongoing challenges such as limited research funding and understaffing that hinder the university’s full potential.

Dr. Ediirisa Mugampoza, Dean of the Faculty of Science, highlighted the major challenge in promotion of Science and Technology, as lack of grants to support potentially very good ideas which are present in Departments / Faculties and Schools.

“There is a need for special-purpose grants to support very good ideas at the grassroots so that research efforts turn into such projects.” Says Prof. Mugampoza
