Prof. John Yakobo Okedi has been installed as the third Chancellor of Kyambogo university. He replaces Prof. John Ssebuwufu who served the University for eight years between 2014 and 2022. President Museveni appointed Pro. Okedi as the Chancellor on 27th April 2022. His appointment was subject to recommendations by the university council. He will serve for four years. He will be the Titular Head of the University and shall preside over all the Ceremonial Assemblies of the University. He will, as Chancellor, confer degrees and award Diplomas and Certificates to students graduating in their varying programmes, as a core function of his duties as a Chancellor.
This is in preparation for the upcoming graduation ceremony due to take place on the 7th, 8th and 9th December 2022.
Speaking during the ceremony on Wednesday, November 9, 2022 the Vice-Chancellor Prof Eli Katunguka said Okedi, who was Chairperson University Council played a critical role in creating a peaceful and harmonious environment at the institution.
Prof. Katunguka said that the university is now set to work with him in his new capacity as Chancellor to take the university to the next level.
Prof. Okedi in his remarks commended the university management for entrusting him with another big role, he pledged to work hand in hand with the university management to promote science and technology at the institution.
Prof. Okedi challenged universities to streamline higher education for learners to have more practical skills that benefit them after school. He pledged to work hard with the administration, top management, and the Kyambogo community to implement the university’s strategic plans, objectives, and goals.
The President of the Republic of Uganda H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni encouraged the newly installed chancellor, Prof John Okedi to promote public-private partnerships in order to supplement the institution’s funding from various stakeholders. The president reiterated government commitment towards supporting the institution to ensure that it benefits from any private partnership arrangement which he said will be very crucial towards the development and growth of the university.
The President’s message was delivered by the Vice President, Major Jessica Alupo who described Okedi as a distinguished scholar and academician with great leadership skills.
Okedi is a professor of hydrobiology, a research scientist, and an environmental expert.
