Today, the Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo University, Professor Eli Katunguka Rwakishaya, conducted a site visit to the West End Pitch to inspect the ongoing construction of a state-of-the-art facility. This ambitious project is a result of a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Kyambogo University and the National Council for Sports (NCS) in May 2024.

The facility is being developed as a primary training ground for two of Africa’s biggest football spectacles: the CHAN 2024 and the AFCON 2027 tournaments.

The construction, currently being carried out by the UPDF Engineering Brigade, represents a synergy among academia, national sports authorities, and the defense forces. During his visit, Prof. Katunguka expressed satisfaction with the momentum of the works, noting that the facility will not only serve international athletes but also leave a lasting legacy for the university community.

The construction was divided into two comprehensive phases to ensure international standards are met: Phase 1, which Started on June 15, 2024, involved the construction of the Pitch, Construction of modern changing rooms, a power house, and a pump room, Installation of large-capacity storage tanks and secure chain-link fencing, Electrical & External Works that included Installation of floodlight masts and the development of parking areas.

Phase 2 commenced on May 18, 2025, which involved the construction of a grandstand (pavilion) for viewers, an administration block, Multi-sport Courts for Basketball and Tennis, and extended parking areas to accommodate high-volume traffic during international events.

With the 2nd Phase already well underway since last year, the Engineering Brigade is working toward a final completion date of August 18, 2026.

The West End Pitch is more than just a local field; it is becoming a critical piece of Uganda’s sports infrastructure. As the country prepares to welcome the continent’s best footballers, Kyambogo University stands ready to provide a world-class environment for preparation and play.
