On 7th May 2026, the School of Computing and Information Science at Kyambogo University successfully conducted a Competence-Based Education and Training (CBET) workshop aimed at strengthening the capacity of academic staff in competence-based curriculum design and delivery. The workshop took place at the IICD Conference Room and brought together staff from three departments within the School: the Department of Data Science, Networks and Artificial Intelligence, the Department of Computer Science, and the Department of Library and Information Science.

The training was organized by the Department of Data Science, Networks and Artificial Intelligence, headed by Dr. Kamukama Ismail, as part of ongoing efforts to align academic programmes with emerging national higher education requirements and industry needs.

The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Okongo Wilberforce, an academic from the Faculty of Education at Kyambogo University and the KYUASA representative to Council. The facilitator guided participants through key principles of competence-based education, learner-centered pedagogy, curriculum alignment, assessment strategies, and approaches for enhancing practical and employable skills among graduates.

In his opening remarks, the Dean of the School of Computing and Information Science, Dr. Denis Ssebuggwawo, emphasized that the training was both timely and necessary. He noted that the workshop would support the School in reviewing and preparing both existing and new academic programmes in line with the competence-based framework required by the National Council for Higher Education. He further encouraged staff to actively embrace competence-based approaches in teaching, learning, and assessment in order to improve the quality and relevance of university education.

The interactive sessions enabled participants to engage in discussions on integrating competence-based approaches into computing, artificial intelligence, networking, data science, and information science programmes. The workshop also provided a platform for sharing experiences and identifying strategies for strengthening curriculum implementation across the School.

The workshop was funded in part by the International Program of the Carnegie Corporation of New York through the Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme for Consolidating Early-Career Academics at Makerere University and four Ugandan partner public universities (Grant No. G-PS-23-60690). The support was secured through the departmental grant under which Dr. Emmanuel Ahishakiye is a Postdoctoral Fellow.

The School of Computing and Information Science expressed appreciation to the facilitator, participants, and funding partners for supporting initiatives aimed at promoting academic excellence, curriculum transformation, and innovative teaching practices at the university.
