In a significant move to bolster international academic cooperation, a high-level delegation from the University of the West of England (UWE) Bristol visited Kyambogo University on April 17, 2026. The visit aimed to solidify a partnership centered on academic excellence, joint research, and addressing pressing societal challenges through innovation.
Welcoming the delegation, Prof. Justus Kwetegyeka, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration at Kyambogo University, emphasized the necessity of global cooperation in the modern educational landscape. “Our focus is on building partnerships that drive academic excellence,” Prof. Kwetegyeka stated. “By dealing with societal issues through collaborative efforts, we ensure our institutions remain relevant to the communities we serve.” He outlined several key areas for immediate collaboration, including: Joint Research Projects, Innovation & Incubation, Staff & Student Exchange and Industry Partnerships.

Dr. Augustine Aturinde, Dean of the School of Built Environment, delivered a compelling presentation on the unique value Kyambogo University brings to the table. He highlighted the university’s:
- Strong Technical & Vocational Focus: A commitment to hands-on, practical skill-building.
- Inclusive Education Leadership: Ensuring quality education is accessible to all.
- Expanding Research Capacity: A growing footprint in impactful academic inquiry.
Representing UWE Bristol, Professor Yvonne Beach (PVC International) and Professor Darren Reynolds (PVC Research & Knowledge Exchange) showcased the University’s impressive global standing. As one of the UK’s top eight Transnational Education (TNE) providers, UWE Bristol brings a wealth of experience to the continent. “84% of our research impact is considered world-leading or internationally excellent,” noted Prof. Reynolds “With over 38,000 students from 167 countries, we are dedicated to developing a global knowledge economy.”

The delegation detailed UWE Bristol’s specific Africa Strategy, which is built on three pillars:
- Social and Cultural Engagement: Strengthening local ecosystems through student and community programs.
- Academic Endeavour: Co-creating practice-led programs and expanding TNE pathways.
- The Africa Hub (UGA): A dedicated gateway based in Uganda to ensure African perspectives shape the university’s work and provide on-the-ground support.
The partnership with Kyambogo University adds to UWE Bristol’s growing list of impactful projects across the continent, such as the Daigo Project in The Gambia and Sustainable Architecture initiatives in Ethiopia.

By joining forces, Kyambogo and UWE Bristol aim to provide transformational global learning experiences. This collaboration will not only support two-way mobility for staff and students but also create a vibrant space for innovation and real-world learning that addresses the unique needs of the Ugandan and British educational sectors.
