The Department of Mechanical and Production Engineering, under the Faculty of Engineering at Kyambogo University, hosted a Training of Trainers and Technicians Workshop on R290 Air Conditioners. The event marks a significant step toward promoting environmentally friendly refrigeration and air conditioning technologies in Uganda.

The training was organized in partnership with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, and Kyambogo University, with support from the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ). The Uganda National Association of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (UNARA) is the lead training consultant for the ongoing technical training.

This initiative is part of the Green Room Air Conditioning (GRACE) Project, funded by the Government of Germany, aimed at encouraging the adoption of sustainable and energy-efficient cooling technologies. The training was officially opened with remarks from Mr. Anthony Orit, Technical Advisor for the GRACE project in Uganda, who invited the Dean Representative from the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Maureen Ssempijja, who is the H.O.D Mechanical and Production Engineering to preside over the opening session. Dr. Maureen expressed her gratitude to all stakeholders, trainers, and trainees, commending their commitment and support toward the institution and the success of the workshop.

Mr. David Otieno, Head of GIZ Uganda Energy and Climate Cluster, extended his appreciation to the participants for their presence and engagement. He emphasized the importance of acquiring practical skills during the training and encouraged participants to transfer their knowledge to the refrigeration and air conditioning sector at large. He also applauded the strong and peaceful collaboration between GIZ and Kyambogo University, which continues to foster mutual growth and development.

The project partners from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development and the National Environment Management Authority also emphasized the relevance of natural refrigerants towards a sustainable refrigeration and air conditioning sector.

This training workshop represents a critical step in building local capacity for the use of natural refrigerants, particularly R290, which has low environmental impact and high energy efficiency and is in line with global efforts to combat climate change.
