Kyambogo University Council approved Shs1.7 billion as part of a grant to promote research, innovation and knowledge generation, one of the key strategic focus areas of the institution. The main goal of the programme was to strengthen the research capacity of the University.

A 6th call for research proposals was sent out to staff by the Research and Grants Adhoc Committee on Monday 31st May, and the deadline was Friday 16th July 2021.

Eight members of academic staff were successful and will benefit from this grant. A total of 142,078,350 shillings will be released for this 6th call to successful staff.

The main objectives for the competitive research grant at Kyambogo University are; to boost research activities within Kyambogo University and increase the quality of research; to increase the quality and quantity of publications from KyU; to empower the academic staff to contribute to the online visibility of KyU research output and Uganda in general; to support innovativeness and identify patents; to increase the capacity of academic staff to supervise KyU graduate students; and to increase the capacity for successful proposal grant writing.

The call was targeting areas of Engineering, Education, Sciences (Biological, Physical, Chemistry, Nature, Environment, Statistics and Mathematics), Arts and Humanities (including sexual violence in KyU), Agriculture and other vocational fields, Special Needs and Rehabilitation, Management and Entrepreneurship.

During the award ceremony, Prof. Maria G. N. Musoke, the Deputy Vice Chancellor in-charge of Academic Affairs who is also the Chairperson Research and Grants Adhoc Committee asked the successful staff to work hard and complete in time.  Accordingly, Implementation of the research activities shall be done within one year and longitudinal research projects are not encouraged. However, if the applicant chooses such a project, it should be phased and budgeted for annually. And the research projects were expected to commence no later than two weeks after the formal award. The quarterly progress reports shall be submitted by the recipients to the Competitive Research Grants Adhoc Committee of Kyambogo University and a final report, in addition to the outputs, shall also be submitted at the end of the project as per the approved project time frame.

The University Secretary Mr. Charles Okello commented that the Research money is still not enough, however, the University management had met the Parliamentary committee to discuss on how research can further be funded. He said universities can only be defined by the quality of research done since it determines the ranking of the university. He asked the successful staff to make accountability and progress reports in time.

All successful beneficiaries of the grant awardees sign a Bonding Agreement with Kyambogo University before receiving the research funds.

Immediately the 7th call was also released on that day and the deadline would be Friday 25th March 2022.
