Prof. Eli Katunguka-Rwakishaya, the Vice Chancellor has said the University is prioritizing students’ welfare. “Our priority is to look after the welfare of students and there’s no debate about it; management is also willing to discuss with you anything to do with students’ welfare:” he said. The Vice-Chancellor made these remarks while officiating at the swearing-in of the 19th Guild Leadership and the handover of the 18th Guild Leadership. The Vice-Chancellor congratulated Wafula Edirne Koholo, the 19th Guild President for winning the confidence of the students’ body before adding that it’s a big challenge where the new guild president needs to remain closely in touch with the office of the Dean of Students for guidance. The Vice-Chancellor appreciated Wafula’s willingness to work with management because that’s the only body to work with and we’re willing to work with anyone who wants to make Kyambogo a prestigious university that its products will be proud of.

He revealed that the university is under a lot of pressure to increase fees but we’re strongly resisting the temptation. He said the Kyambogo University students pay fees that are less than some of the babies in Kindergarten. “We’re entering into a phase where we will need to change the fees payable by students.

On his part, the Guild President said the guild leadership is willing to work hand in hand with the administration as long as it is for the benefit of the students; together that way, we will serve our university. “Our term will focus on that and as long as we rhyme together, we shall have no problems, he said”.

Serge Tumwine, the outgone 18th Guild President congratulated Wafula before adding that one-year tenure is short and before you realize it, elections will be here. Use the opportunity to fulfil your manifesto before your term ends. Students have made the right choice and please serve to their expectations. We have had everyone present to hand over and no one should seek to stay beyond that one year of service. There has been a habit of former ministers refusing to hand over but for us, the entire former cabinet is here. We always try to fulfil our manifesto; some you achieve, others you leave to the incoming team, I have come to learn that truth. He concluded by thanking the Administration for the support given during his tenure.

Nakimuli Agnes Mugalu, the Ag Dean of Students advised the new team to listen to the advice of council because nobody has a monopoly on ideas and wisdom. She added that o succeed as guild president, they must work with the administration. “Never forget that whatever you are, you remain a student because no one will give you extra marks for being a guild president; you must fulfil your obligations as students. At this level, you must sort good advice from bad ones; you will realize that there are things you won’t achieve as you expected. It’s your responsibility to project a good image of Kyambogo University” concluded Agnes.
